By typing IM (for Image) I still get to access easily the new External References Palette. I have my list of aliases customized so XR points to CLASSICXREF instead of opening the External References Palette. See the image below where I have the new External References Palette and the old XREF both showing on the screen. Attributes of XREF Files Using XREFs in Round-Trip Communication. That wish is granted just by knowing that the old XREF was never deleted from AUTOCAD (at least till the day and version 2009), and it can be accessed typing CLASSICXREF. Conversion rules for data exchange between ARCHICAD and AutoCAD are stored in a file. If we add that the External Reference Palette tends to be much heavier in terms of computer resources used, we have enough reasons to want to old XREF manager back. What we do with images and XREFs tend to be pretty different, so it could be good to see only the XREFs listed if we wanted.

Since version 2007, AutoCAD uses by default the External References Palette instead of the old XREF Manager to handle External References and Images all in one interface.Īlthough it is useful to have a palette always on to handle XREFs, it is sometimes a big annoying to have all images and XREFs listed. Merge (bind) attached referenced drawings permanently with your current drawing when the project is complete and ready to be archived. Are you missing the old and simple XREF manager? Don't worry, it is still there.Keep the names of layers, dimensioning styles, text styles, and other named elements in your drawing separate from those in referenced drawings. When you open your drawing, each referenced drawing is automatically reloaded, so it reflects the latest state of the referenced drawing file. Ensure that the most recent version of the referenced drawing is displayed.

Architectural drawings in particular can get interesting, because. To differentiate them, it adds the xref file name and a vertical separator bar to the front of the layer name. You can also assemble a master drawing from component drawings that may undergo changes as a project develops. First, when an xref is inserted into a host, AutoCAD creates a new layer in the host for each layer in the xref, even if it is the same as a layer already in the host. Coordinate your work with the work of others by referencing other drawings in your drawing to keep up with the changes being made by other designers. Therefore, with xrefs you can build drawings without significantly increasing the drawing file size. Any changes to a referenced drawing are displayed in the current drawing when it is opened or reloaded. It was a hot summer afternoon and once again Captain LearnCurve was on special assignment, this time in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

Attached xrefs are linked to, but not actually inserted in, another drawing. Clipping Right Along with Xrefs (Learning Curve AutoCAD Tutorial) 31 Oct, 2008 By: Bill Fane We continue the discussion started last month about the power of the mighty xref. With xrefs, changes made in the referenced drawing are reflected in the current drawing. Even though all of your layers are set to plot in the actual xref drawing they won't if reference in on a non-plot layer. Check to make sure they weren't xrefed in on a non-plot layer. You can attach an entire drawing file to the current drawing as a referenced drawing ( xref). Whichever layer is current when you xref will the the layer your xref is on.
